The report by Us Weekly magazine was confirmed today by Suvari's publicist, Melissa Kates.
The statement said Suvari is claiming irreconcilable differences as the basis for her divorce petition, filed yesterday.
Us Weekly said the court papers were filed in Los Angeles.
Brinkmann, 43, and Suvari, 26, eloped in March 2000 just after the actor had turned 21.
The couple met while working on the cheerleading comedy Sugar & Spice.
They recently collaborated on the upcoming Standing Still, a film directed by Matthew Weiss.
Suvari's screen credits also include American Beauty, two American Pie films and Beauty Shop.
